Studio Arts Scholarship Application 2023

If you wish to be considered for the Studio Art scholarship at Centre College, please review the following information and then complete the form (including uploading portfolio materials) below by February 1, 2023.

The Studio Art Scholarship recognizes students who have demonstrated exceptional achievement in the visual arts and are committed to college-level study in studio art and art history. Majoring or minoring in visual arts is not required. International and domestic students are eligible for this opportunity.

Benefits include a scholarship in the amount of $3,000 to $5,000 per year. This scholarship may be combined with another general merit scholarship.

Successful candidates should demonstrate:

exceptional achievement in the visual arts;
commitment to studying studio art and art history.

Recipients of the Studio Art Scholarship who enroll at Centre College must:

enroll in a total of five studio art and art history classes before the end of the junior year. More details regarding progression of courses available upon acceptance to the college.
Earn a grade of at least “C” in all studio art and art history courses. Upon review of all application materials, finalists will be invited to interview with Centre College faculty members. All candidates will be notified of their status by mid-March.

Studio Art Portfolio Requirements and Instructions

Studio Art Scholarship Portfolio Requirements

Your portfolio should include 5-10 artworks you have created
The works in your portfolio may be in any medium. For instance (but not restricted to): drawing, painting, multi-medial images, sculptures, ceramics, glass, photography, and moving image (aka video).
- It is appropriate to submit a page or two from a sketchbook. Not all the works in your portfolio need to be highly finished pieces made for exhibition or competition.
- A group of works may be considered as one item, when appropriate. For example, a set of ceramic cups can be photographed as a group and submitted as one artwork.

Studio Art Portfolio Submission Instructions

Prepare a good photograph of each of the 2D and 3D artworks in your portfolio. Your photos should be JPG files. Name the files with your name and the number of the artwork in the checklist (see step #3) using this format: Lastname_Firstname_01.jpg
To submit artworks in the medium of moving image, please post your work at Vimeo or YouTube, then include a link to it in the checklist (see step #3). The filename of your posted work should be in the same format as the JPG files. For example: Lastname_Firstname_03.mp4
Include a title page/checklist as a guide to your portfolio; submit this as a PDF document, titled using the format: Lastname_Firstname_checklist.pdf. The number of each artwork in the list will correspond to the number of each photo file. For each artwork, provide the following information:
- Photograph filename OR link to moving image
- Title
- Medium
- Dimensions (vertical by horizontal for 2D arts; vertical by horizontal by depth for 3D art; duration in minutes and seconds for moving image art).
- Year Created
- One to three sentences of commentary about your creative process and goals for this work.
Below is an example of the format of your checklist:
- Lastname_Firstname_01.jpg

- 14 x 17 inches

- {your commentary}

Advice for preparing a good photograph of the 2D and 3D artworks in your portfolio.

a) To take good photographs of your two-dimensional art, the art should not be under glass or plastic. Place the image by a large window, without direct sunshine, to get even illumination of the surface. There should be no cast shadows on the artwork. The image should not be skewed in the photograph.

b) To photograph three-dimensional art, place it in good light in front of a simple uncluttered background. Daylight outdoors, or indoors from a window with no direct sunshine, will produce the best illumination. Light defused through tracing paper, a thin white sheet, or reflected off a white wall can also produce a good result.

c) Using a photo editing app, adjust the exposure and color to get an accurate reproduction of the original.

d) Crop photos of two-dimensional works so that only the art is visible. The photo should not include a picture frame or any of the surrounding environment. Crop photos of three-dimensional works so that they are alone in the photo, fill the frame, and minimize the environment.

e) Up to four works in portfolio may be represented by two photos, if you feel that those works would be best understood by the inclusion of a second photo. Do so only if it is necessary. The second photo might show an alternate viewpoint of a three-dimensional work or a detail of a large drawing or painting. Use this format to name supplementary photos: Lastname_Firstname_01a.jpg
