Performing Arts Scholarship Candidate Form 2023

If you wish to be considered for a performing arts scholarship at Centre College, please review the following information and then complete the form below by the date of your chosen application plan deadline. (Late applicants will be considered on a space available basis).:

The performing arts scholarship recognizes musicians, vocalists, actors, and/or theater technicians who have experience in and a commitment to music and/or dramatic arts. Majoring or minoring in performing arts is not required. International and domestic students are eligible for this opportunity.

Students may apply for a performing arts scholarship in more than one area by submitting additional candidate forms; however, students are only eligible for one performing arts scholarship in one concentration.

Benefits include a scholarship in the amount of $3,000 to $5,000 per year. This scholarship may be combined with another general merit scholarship.

Successful candidates should demonstrate:
• experience in and a commitment to music and/or theatre;
• The desire to participate in the Music or Theatre programs including classes, productions, lessons, and/or concerts. Majoring or minoring in music or theatre is not required.

Recipients of the MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP who enroll at Centre College must:
•   enroll in an appropriate ensemble each semester when not abroad;
Your ensemble participation will be determined each semester in consultation with, and approval of your scholarship advisor (a full-time faculty member)
•   enroll in applied lessons and/or a music class each semester when not abroad;
•   enroll in MUS 116: Foundations of World Views of Music and one of MUS 120: Materials and Structure of Music I, MUS 220: Materials and Structure of Music II, or MUS 232: Music History, Form, and Analysis by or during their junior year;
•   successfully pass music courses with a grade of at least a “C”.

Recipients of the THEATRE SCHOLARSHIP who enroll at Centre College must:
• Take Acting 1 (THR 117)
• Take one of Intro to Tech Theatre OR Intro to Design (THR 150 or 160)
• Take one of Foundations of Drama & Theatre 1, Foundations of Drama & Theatre 2, or Theory & Criticism (THR 133, 134, or 230)
• Make a substantial contribution to the life of the Theatre Program each academic year

Applicants may choose to audition in person or virtually, via video. In person interviews and auditions will be scheduled by Victoria Pook, Performing Arts Coordinator. For those choosing the virtual option, videos should be received by the application deadline of your chosen admission application plan.

International and domestic students are eligible for this opportunity.

Performing Arts Scholarship Audition Requirements

Composition: Scores and/or recordings (preferably both) of two representative original pieces, preferably for different instruments, voice, or instrumental music/vocal combinations.

Piano/Instrumental Music Audition*: Two pieces in contrasting styles from different musical periods. Maximum total time is 12 minutes.

*It is completely acceptable to perform without an accompanist.

Voice Audition*: Three songs in contrasting styles performed from memory. One may be from musical theater; the others may be from the art song, folk song, or aria repertoire. Two different languages are preferred but all may be in English.

Music Performing Arts Scholarship Application Video/Portfolio Submission Instructions

Applicants should record each required piece in one, continuous take.
The applicant’s entire body and accompanist (if utilized) should be in the frame. The video should be recorded from the AUDIENCE perspective. That is, your video should be recorded as if you are giving a performance and the video is an audience member.
All videos should be uploaded to YouTube as an unpublished or unlisted video (make sure the video is NOT password protected). The exact link should be shared directly on the form below. Your video title should include: your first and last name, the title of the piece, and the composer.
For YouTube audition submissions, please test the link before you submit it to ensure that it works. Please DO NOT password protect your video. Do not send any video files directly in your email to the Admission Office. Do not use Drop Box or any other programs as it is difficult to share viewing permissions with all of the faculty and staff that will need to view your application.

Theatre Arts Audition: Acting: Prepare two contrasting pieces (about two minutes each) – one classical (Shakespeare, for example) and one contemporary. If selected for an interview, be prepared to discuss your process, your previous theatrical experience, what you hope to get out of a liberal arts theatre program, and where you see yourself in ten years.

Production/Technical Theatre: Prepare a portfolio with photos of examples of sets or other production work you have done as well as a resume listing the productions you have been involved with and what your role was in each

If you opt for an in person audition, you will be contacted by the Performing Arts Coordinator to schedule your audition time and receive additional details about the audition day. If you opt for a virtual audition, you will be contacted by the Performing Arts Coordinator with instructions on how to submit your video and other required documents. Please note, Theatre applicants who opt for a virtual audition will be asked to schedule an interview via Zoom or Microsoft Teams with Theatre Program Faculty. Music applicants who opt for a virtual audition will be contacted by a Music Faculty member after you have submitted your video.
